This publication explores the social, political and cultural background to Tracy Mackenna & Edwin Janssen’s video installation Shotgun Wedding. A PERFECT IMAGE OF OURSELVES


A Perfect image of Ourselves, a fusion of an artist book and a catalogue, gives an overview of work produced by Tracy Mackenna & Edwin Janssen between 1998 and 2004 through a selection of projects that explore collaboration, identity and notions of place.


Texts include And together they are strong by Rein Wolfs, then Chief Curator at Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, the  Netherlands and currently Artistic Director Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany and Secrets are safe with us by Tracy Mackenna.

This edition of 50 copies contains archival digital prints of the 48 images 
from the slide projection Truth, Error, Opinion and an essay by Edward Welch Arming the Eye: Martha Rosler and Critical Vision, that contextualises Mackenna and Janssen’s still image digital slide projection in relation to visual knowledge.

ON GROWTH, & FORMS OF MEANING

This publication was made in our temporary public studio for presentation, exchange and production during the process led interdisciplinary project On Growth, & Forms of Meaning. The result of sustained visual and verbal dialogue between Tracy Mackenna & Edwin Janssen, and designer Marco Stout, this art work in book form was generated live in response to a set of objects and subjects within a curated environment. Produced by Paul Harrison in the Visual Research Centre’s publishing studio, it contains hand-written, digital and silk-screened printed pages.

PUBLISHED MATTER: A talk in 24 cards


An invitation to speak about the place of publishing within our practice prompted us to make our new publication ‘Published Matter: A talk in 24 cards’ on which the public talk is based. The talk was given at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh in April 2013, as part of the Artists' BookMarket event.

THE STORY OF THE GIRL AND THE APPLE TREE

This publication encapsulates many of the elements in the exhibition that was made for The Museum of Loss and Renewal. Made in collaboration with our daughter Esméemilja, The Story of the Girl and the Apple Tree combines her shoes that have been collected from birth to present day, and the cycle of life that has been explored with reference to Karl Popper’s text ‘Of Clouds and Clocks: an approach to the problem of rationality and the freedom of man’.

ED AND ELLIS IN SCHIEDAM

This publication documents the project Ed and Ellis in Schiedam A fake political party List 0* was established with the actor John Buysman commissioned to play party leader Koos van der Sluys. He took to the streets to bring List O to the attention of the Schiedammers with Tracy and Edwin as his promotional team distributing flyers, folders and balloons - ‘No crap! 
List O!’

FRIENDLY INVASIONS 2034


Published as a component of Tracy Mackenna & Edwin Janssen: Friendly Invasions 2034, the book documents a three month long project during which we were repeatedly at work in the developing sculptural form. The book pages are printed with silver ink.


The first stage of Friendly Invasions 2034 was commissioned and produced by artconnexion, Lille, France and took place in artconnexion’s exhibition space between 4 October and 6 December 2014. The exhibition project and this publication are contributions to the celebration of 20 years of artconnexion.
